Calum's responsibilities include working alongside the service team, and while under supervision from his mentors, he carries out servicing procedures, simple breakdowns, Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDIs) and assists other qualified technicians in the team.

What does Calum enjoy most? "I enjoy working on the larger tractors such as 7Rs and 8Rs as they are interesting and less common in our area. It is therefore good to be able to work across the branches as you see more variation of equipment and gain experience of the larger tractors in Stockbury's more arable area. I also like fabrication work where customers want something special made up for an unusual application. I get chance to work on a wide variety of jobs and doing something different every day makes my job interesting."

Apprenticeship training for Calum has meant 8 week courses each year at John Deere's training facility at Ruddington Apprentice College, near Nottingham. Typically the course is based on 70% theory and then they transfer into the workshop and 30% is spent on practical on all kinds of John Deere equipment..

"The good thing about training as part of the apprenticeship is that you get chance to work on a very wide range of equipment so it broadens your knowledge," commented Calum. "I am about to qualify at a Level 3 Diploma on Land-based Technologies and that will give me the opportunity to progress to the next stage of qualification which will be an LTA2. So plenty of progress and development for my career."

Guy joined BBA at the very beginning in 2007. He was already a fully qualified service technician, having an excellent awareness of the John Deere product. As the senior member of the team of Service Technicians, Guy, an LTA3 took on the responsibility of service, repair and maintenance of major pieces of equipment, including combines. He also took responsibility of taking new apprentices under his wing and showing them the ropes. Often, when the Service Manager was on holiday or on training, Guy would assume responsibility of running the workshop schedule. In mid-2014, an opportunity became available as Workshop Co-ordinator and Guy has proven to be the right choice for that role, reporting directly to the Service Manager.

Guy is undergoing ‘on-the-job’ training with a focus on ‘Industry Leading Competencies’ to further his department skills and has taken very well to his numerous new responsibilities. So, how has Guy dealt with his new duties? “while I have all the technical and diagnostic skills, as my new role definitely requires a complete knowledge of our machinery, additionally I am spending a lot more time communicating with our customers. I need to understand their requirements and to co-ordinate our service technicians, making sure that we respond effectively to maximise customer satisfaction. We have a great team spirit here and I enjoy the busy atmosphere of our department.”
